Work at Height
Work-at-height continues to be one of the most dangerous activities in industry. Certainly, within the construction industry, it is the greatest killer. Legislation was greatly tightened up with the arrival of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 but, though the vast majority of leading firms in the country are striving for compliance, many of the smaller companies and ‘one-man-bands’ continue to put people at risk by ignoring the law.
Safe practice for work-at-height requires risk assessment. Wherever a person is required to work at height such that the person or equipment might fall, causing injury, then a risk assessment must be carried out. As with any risk assessment, its conclusions must be shown to the persons affected by them, and appropriate control measures put in place.
Many factors need to be taken into account in the production of a comprehensive work-at-height risk assessment which crucially must include an evaluation of the fitness of the person required to work at height.
